Join the American Cancer Society for the Kick Off of the 2010 Relay For Life of Las Cruces and Dona Ana County at Young Park on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Teams and cancer survivors are encouraged to register, while we have music, entertainment and a Health Fair featuring local businesses and organizations. This is free to the public and very family friendly.

Curves hosts food drive!

Curves of Las Cruces is encouraging women in the area to show their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves Food Drive starting today to March 22. Curves of Las Cruces will collect non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local area. The goal, according to Catherine Lockman of Curves of Las Cruces, is for the community to come together to help families in need.

Non-members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum donation of $30 anytime between today and March 22 can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join in exchange for their donation.

Curves Las Cruces will be donating to the following charities: El Caldito Soup Kitchen at the Del Rey Club, Gospel Rescue Mission at the Missouri Club and Casa de Peregrinos at the Picacho Club.

March is American Red Cross Month

March is American Red Cross Month and we would like to celebrate by letting our community know that the Southwestern New Mexico Chapter is alive, well and providing services to the seven counties we serve.

We would like to gather as many Southwestern New Mexico Chapter supporters this Saturday morning, March 6, 2010 here at the Chapter for an opportunity to take pictures with our supporters and the ERV.  We will then use these pictures to promote Red Cross Month and our Champions Fundraising Campaign which we will be promoting through March and April.

“Back by Noon” Outings

The Southwest Environmental Center is excited to announce its Spring 2010 schedule of “Back by Noon” Saturday morning guided natural history outings. The outings are designed to showcase some of the unique natural features of the Las Cruces/El Paso area. Informative, family friendly, and not too strenuous, most of the trips will have you back to your car before noon.

Featuring a mix of the new and familiar, the Spring 2010 lineup includes the following trips:

  • Tonuco Mountain (Rincon)—March 6
  • Rio Bosque and the Border Wall (El Paso)—March 13
  • Wildlife of NMSU’s College Ranch (north of Las Cruces)—March 27
  • San Andres National Wildlife Refuge (north of Las Cruces)—April 17
  • Birds of Swan Pond (Selden Canyon)—April 24
  • Cacti of Tortugas Mountain (Las Cruces)—May 1
  • Wildflowers of the Organ Mountains (Las Cruces)—May 8
  • Urban burrowing owls (Las Cruces)—June 19
  • Bats of the Franklin Mountains (El Paso)—June 26 (Note: this is a Back by Midnight trip)
  • Chihuahuan Desert Arthropods (Las Cruces)—June 5

Skill Building Training

Skill Building Training will begin this Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 9 am. The trainings will be held at the County Government Building on 845 N. Motel Blvd. If you have not yet registered, you still have time.

At Yale medical School, he is Director of the Division of Mental Health Services and Outcomes Research in the Department of Psychiatry. He has over 18 years of experience evaluating, disseminating and monitoring over 900 innovative mental health programs across the VA system.

Cancer Research Awareness

Come get a free haircut and help researchers find a cure for cancer in children! The haircut will leave you bald and you will have to do a little groundwork by raising money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This foundation holds events nationwide where participants are asked to raise donations for cancer research in enchange for shaving their heads.

Anyone interested in participating in the events should register online at www.stbaldricks.org. Click  on the “Events” tab to find the two events in New Mexico. The Las Cruces St. Baldrick’s event will be help at 3 p.m. on March 20 at Dickerson’s Event Center, 3920 W. Picacho Ave. For information about the Las Cruces event, call Hall at (575) 642-4068.

New Zumba classes starting at Meerscheidt Recreation Center 1600 E. Hadley Ave. $1.50 per class. Home & Garden Show

The Home & Garden Show is a regional public marketplace showcasing businesses that cater to the home improvement and new home construction markets. People who want to build homes or improve their existing ones are invited to bring their project materials and questions to the Show and receive advice from industry professionals. Entertainment includes live stage performances and experts who do how-to demonstrations.There are many activities offered such as seminars, cooking demonstrations, car show, plant sale and crafts.
