Revoking tax-exempt
On May 17, 2010, the IRS began revoking tax-exempt status from nonprofits that failed to file three consecutive annual returns (Form 990-N, 990-EZ, 990, or 990-PF). As a result, as many as 300,000 nonprofits may lose their tax-exempt status, effectively shrinking the nonprofit sector by 25%.
What do YOU need to know?
Which nonprofits are at risk?
What happens to a nonprofit that loses its exemption?
What happens if a donor gives to a charity that has lost its exemption?
Â
GuideStar’s new report, “Automatic Revocation of Nonprofits’ Tax-Exempt Status: What Nonprofits, Grantmakers, and Donors Need to Know,” answers all of these questions, and more. Written by Linda M. Lampkin of ERI Economic Research Institute, it is a no-nonsense overview of the impact of this earthshaking development in the nonprofit world.

Doña Ana County is soliciting applications for the following vacant categories: advocate, consumer, educational or provider. To request an application for alliance membership, contact Laura Henry at the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department at (575) 525-5834 or by email at laurah@donaanacounty.org.
Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Monday Aug. 30, 2010.
Tax Free Weekend
Coming soon to a retail store near you is the annual New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday. This year it’s August 6-8, and if you have school-age children, it’s nothing short of a bonanza. For that weekend the state suspends collection of gross receipts tax on sales of qualifying items so you can buy the items tax free. Because many merchants also absorb the tax on a number of non-qualifying items, you are the beneficiary all around. Please see the publication FYI-203, Gross Receipts Tax Holiday, for the scoop on this popular program that has been in effect since 2005.
