As the winter months approach, the New Mexico Department of Health and several agencies in the community are working to make sure that residents are safe from the harshness of the season.
The Department of Health’s Las Cruces Public Health Office will be holding a blanket and jacket drive called “Warm Up Las Cruces” from October 2 until the last week in February 2007. Clean or new blankets and adult jackets can be dropped off Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the north reception desk of the Las Cruces Public Health Office, located at 1170 North Solano. Department of Health Staff will take all donated items to local public services agencies that will distribute the jacket and blankets to those in need.
Eleanor Smith, a nutritionist with the Women Infants and Children Program at the Las Cruces Public Health Office, said that while temperatures may be warm now, winter is right around the corner and it is important that people willing to donate jacket and blankets do it now so residents can be prepared.
Smith, who started “Warm Up Las Cruces” last year with other WIC and clinic staff at the Las Cruces Public Health Office, said the idea came from staff noticing that sometimes clients visit the office during the winter months with a very thin or no coat at all. Smith remembers one situation where a client had to reschedule her appointment because she had to wait for her father to come home because he had the family coat.
“This family lived sharing one winter jacket the entire season,” Smith said. “Thankfully Las Cruces residents were very generous during last year’s donation drive and we hope that trend will continue this year.”
In 2005 “Warm Up Las Cruces” collected more than 100 new and used jackets and blankets, with a local business donating 15 new comforters that were considered “out of season” and were slated to be thrown away.
Other agencies in Las Cruces are also accepting donations of clothing and other items, including Jardin de los Niños, located at 999 Amador. Jardin de los Niños also takes donations year-round. Non-perishable food, clothing, home items, diapers, and new and used children’s items such as toys can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
La Casa, a domestic violence shelter in Las Cruces, also accepts items year round. Items can be dropped off at 800 South Walnut from 8 am. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. La Casa accepts donations of clothing and nonperishable food items.
For parents in need of a jacket for their child, Community Action Agency will be holding the annual Coats for Kids campaign for elementary school children. Registration for the program will take place from Oct. 17 to Nov. 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Distribution of jackets will take place on Dec. 2 at 7:30 a.m. at 320 East Wyatt Drive.
