FAMILY-TO-FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAMÂ

A series of 12 weekly classes structured to help caregivers understand and support individuals with serious mental illness while maintaining their own well-being. The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family member volunteers who know what it’s like to have a loved one struggling with one of these brain disorders.
There is no cost to participate in the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program.
Over 300,000 people in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Italy have completed this course. We think you will be pleased by how much assistance the program offers. Please call for more information.Â

Topics include insurance options, subsidies, Medicare, Medicaid, Indian Health Services, small businesses, rural health, workforce development, and economics.

Ciclovia-August 29
The next Ciclovia is scheduled for this coming Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Young Park from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.Â
This will be the emphasis of health month and Project Hope will be conducting glucose screening, blood pressure, body mass index and maybe cholesterol screening, if supplies arrive in time. There will be A1C offered to those with high glucose readings and that are considered high risk.Â
We will also have pet adoptions being offered all day (and also next month.)Â
The Passport to Health Program will be conducting drawings for prizes for those that have completed and turned in their passports.Â
We will have our regular programs: Mesilla Valley Bike Coalition, Walk, Yoga, ZUMBA, and Jump Rope. All of the other usual activities will be available.

Apply for the Master Gardener Program
The Dona Ana County Extension Service is accepting applications for the 2010-2011 Master Gardener Program.
Applications are available at garden centers and at the Dona Ana County Extension office at 530 N. Church Street. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 20 for the 14 week course. The class fee is $80 to cover materials.

The Extension Master Gardener Program is a volunteer gardening program that was established in 1972 and exists in all fifty states. Volunteers are given an intensive training program in plant basics, plant cultural requirements, landscape design principles, and other gardening topics. The volunteers then serve the community under the direction of the County Extension Service.
Free tutor training
The Literacy Volunteers of Dona Ana County will hold a free tutor training workshop orientation at 5:30 p.m., Thursday at Dona Ana Community college. Literacy Volunteers of Dona Ana County will offer basic literacy tutor certification training from 8:30-4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at DACC. Sustainability Plan
 Draft Sustainability Plan Available, Open Houses Scheduled

The City of Las Cruces’ Sustainability Program will host two public open houses to review the draft Sustainability Action Plan. Both events will be held at City Hall (700 N Main Street), in the second floor conference room 2007-A at the following times:

Wednesday, September 1st, 2:00pm to 8:00pm
Thursday, September 2nd, 9am to 1:00pm

Because these are open houses, participants may arrive at any time and stay as long as they wish. OASIS offers classes
OASIS is offering a three week class, based on Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay, “Circles.” The classes will be held at 6 p.m. today and on Aug. 19 and 26 at the meeting house, 1145 Mesa St.
This essay offers a refreshing perspective on the circular aspects of our daily living patterns. Presentation of weekly topic, followed by group discussion. Cost is $10 per class, or $25 if paid in full at first class.

DACC Adult Classes
The Adult Basic Education Program at Doña Ana Branch Community College offers free classes and books to help adults acquire a basic education from literacy level through the 12th grade throughout Doña Ana County. Fall classes run from Aug. 30 through Dec. 10.
Registration begins for ESL classes on Aug. 16 and for GED classes on Aug. 23 at your nearest learning center from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For Saturday registration scheduling, check with your nearest learning center.
For new students to the program, placement into GED or ESL must be completed two weeks prior to registration. You are encouraged to begin your program orientation, pretesting earlier in order to avoid a delay at registration.
